How to Prep, Apply & Care for Your Wood Using Oceanic Wood Oil

Welcome to your first step in nourishing wood the natural way. Whether it’s a new piece, a family heirloom or a fresh workshop project, this guide will help you get the most out of your Oceanic Wood Oil.

What You’ll Need

  • Oceanic Wood Oil
  • Lint-free cloth or non abrasive pad, or cotton rag
  • Optional: 320–600 grit sandpaper
  • Gloves (optional)
  • Clean / Dust free workspace

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Time needed: 10–15 mins

  1. Ensure your wood is clean & dry.
Remove any dust, dirt or previous finishes. For best results, the wood should be bare.
  2. Lightly sand (if needed).
Use fine sandpaper (320–600 grit) to create a smooth surface and open the grain for better oil penetration. Always sand with the grain.
  3. Dust it off.
Wipe away all sanding dust using a clean cloth or hoover nozzle.

Step 2: Applying Oceanic Wood Oil

Time needed: 20–30 mins (plus drying time)

  1. Stir the oil.
If separated, give your oil a gentle stir before use. Do not shake the jar.
  2. Scoop & rub.
Using a lint-free cloth or gloved hand, scoop a small amount and rub it directly into the wood in a circular motion, working with the grain.
  3. Let it soak.
Allow the oil to penetrate for 30–60 minutes. The wood will drink what it needs.
  4. Buff off excess.
Using a clean, dry cloth, buff off any unabsorbed oil. The surface should feel smooth, not sticky.

Step 3: Drying & Curing

  • Touch-dry: 6–12 hours (cool, dry conditions)
  • Light use: 24 hours
  • Fully cured: 3–5 days (depending on temperature & humidity)

Top Tip: For deep protection, you can apply a second coat after 24 hours.

🔁 Ongoing Care

  • Reapply oil every 6–12 months, or when the wood appears dry.
  • For high-use items (e.g., chopping boards), clean gently and re-oil more regularly.
  • Avoid harsh cleaners. Use mild soap and water only.

🛡️ Storage & Safety

  • Store in a cool, dry place with lid tightly sealed.
  • Use cloths responsibly: soak in water before disposal to avoid fire risk from spontaneous combustion (rare, but good practice).
